Wine Trends in North America

SMV Canada keeps a close watch on the fluid trends of the international wine market, particularly those making waves in North America.

By taking part in the 2022 edition of the SMV Canada wine competition, producers are in fact positioning their wines for success and obtaining a real-time snapshot of the North American wine markets.

In harmony with nature

It’s unanimous! Canadian and American consumers are thirsty for products that are more and more in harmony with nature. Respect for the land, environmentally-friendly growing methods for certain organic wines, biodynamic wines, vegan wines and natural wines all fall under this trend that continues to grow among North American consumers.

drinkability

Another widespread trend is the notion of drinkability, a measure of how quickly a wine provides a sensation of enjoyment. Overly woody or structured wines are no longer sought after. Balance, freshness and adaptability are now at the top of the list. Moreover, consumer sensitivity to sugar content is an undeniable trend. Whether for health, weight control, or both, this characteristic is more and more important in choosing a wine for many North American consumers.

White wines

Yet another trend is the growing popularity of white wines. No longer just an aperitif, white wines now have their rightful place on the table. Various types of international cuisine, including the multiple variations of Asian and Middle-Eastern dishes, have made it possible to create new and interesting juxtapositions of flavour with many white wines, both varietal and blended, the latter of which is increasingly popular with consumers.

Sparkling wines

Sparkling wines also represent a powerful trend in the North American market. Celebrations and get-togethers provide a succession of occasions to pop the cork and savour the moment. The phenomenal success of Prosecco, Cava, Crémant and Sekt wines are a prime example of a certain democratization of the prestige associated with celebrating an event with a bottle of bubbly.
