Antonin Bonnet est un expert en vins, spécialisé sur le marché Américain. Il est propriétaire de boutiques de vin en France dans la région de Montpellier et en développement à New York. Il fait partie de cette nouvelle génération d'hommes d'affaires du monde du vin et sa présence au concours est essentielle pour démontrer l'importance d'avoir des acheteurs de vin au sein du jury de SMVC 2021.
Q: Comment avez-vous trouvé votre expérience au SMVC 2021?
R: J'ai trouvé l'expérience très enrichissante - cela m'a permis de rencontrer un grand nombre de professionnels du monde du vin (du QC et d'ailleurs) avec qui j'ai eu l'occasion d'échanger et le plaisir de déguster plus de 180 cuvées différentes, lors des 4 jours du salon - les échanges lors des dégustations ont été primordiaux pour noter les vins et leur permettre d'obtenir les notes qu'ils méritaient - cela m'a aussi permis de découvrir des vins et des cépages de régions que je connaissais peu ou pas comme la Moldavie par exemple et d'attiser par la même occasion ma curiosité et mon envie de sortir des régions / appellations que je connais bien. Je vais désormais me pencher un peu plus sur le Chili et le Portugal, dans les prochaines semaines.
Q: Pourquoi est-ce important pour vous de participer à SMVC?
R: C'est un concours qui est en pleine expansion et qui permet à de nombreux pays d'être représentés en dehors des producteurs dit ''traditionnels'' dans un marché qui donne sa chance a tout le monde. Je suis reconnaissant de pouvoir aider à identifier à l'aveugle les nouvelles pépites de demain - cela me permet aussi de continuer à aiguiser mes capacités de dégustation dans une atmosphère professionnelle et agréable ; entouré de passionnés de vins. Enfin cela donne une bonne idée de l'évolution de la viticulture et de la viniculture dans un contexte de production qui a subi récemment un bon nombre d'aléas, en plus du réchauffement climatique qui semble désormais inéluctable.
Jib Nasrallah is CAPS sommelier and Licensee & PWSS (Private) Network Manager for the NSLC Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation. His role within the wine tasting and selection team for Nova Scotia is important and his contribution adds great relevance to our international jury.
Q: How did you find your experience at SMVC 2021?
A: I was eager to learn about the process of SMVC and what it takes to execute such a large scale event. I was happy to learn that Real and his team have a flawless execution. The schedule is managed down to the hour with a team directing me in every direction, when needed and safely. I had the opportunity to meet a number of different professionals from our wine industry from Quebec and Canada. I worked with a wonderful team of professionals on my team, and I appreciated their patience with my minimal French.
Q: Why is it important for you to participate in SMVC?
A: At NSLC, our tasting team has our protocols and practices in how we execute wine tastings for our organization. I’m appreciative to be a part of an international jury with so many years of experience to learn from. Especially, at this international level of tasting. Also, I simply wanted to have the opportunity to learn from so many other wine professionals. There are so many different perspectives and experiences coming together in one building, it is a wonderful opportunity. I am better for it.

Son expertise ajoute une autre dimension au SMVC et souligne l'importance d'avoir une représentation d'acheteurs de différents secteurs du monde.
Q: Comment avez-vous trouvé votre expérience au SMVC 2021?
R: Cette expérience fut épanouissante. J'ai pu échanger, débattre avec des professionnels de différents secteurs du secteur viti-vinicole venant du monde entier. C’est riche d'enseignements. J'ai eu aussi le plaisir de découvrir des vins du monde encore peu présents sur le marché français, comme par exemple, j'ai eu le plaisir de découvrir des vins de Moldavie.
Q: Pourquoi est-ce important pour vous de participer à SMVC?
R: Il est important d'échanger, d'écouter le marché international afin de comprendre les nouvelles tendances, demandes de demain. Le SMVC ayant une réputation internationale permet de découvrir des vins de très grande qualité ainsi que la diversification du marché.
Kenneth Gunn is President & CEO of Marchands des Ameriques, a 10-year-old wine agency, which operates across Canada, with the bulk of its activities centered in Ontario and Quebec. Kenneth brings with him his unique knowledge of Canada’s wine markets and the preferences of its diverse consumers. His role as a wine selector and importer makes him an important addition to our jury.
Q: How did you find your experience at SMVC 2021?
A: My experience at SMVC 2021 was inspiring. The variety of wine judges from different countries, backgrounds, and from the various segments of the wine industry made for a balanced approach to wine judging and was also very enriching on a personal basis.
Q: Why is it important for you to participate in SMVC?
A: I believe it is important to support SMVC as Canada’s primary international wine competition. This contest provides an opportunity to blend the tastes and preferences of Canadians with those of experts from around the world.
Richard Bastien est président de l’Association Canadienne des Oenologues et cofondateur de l’un des plus importants cabinets de conseils et laboratoires d’analyses oenologiques du Québec. Son expertise et celle de ses collègues est importante dans la conduite de nos commissions de dégustations au SMVC.
Q: Comment avez-vous trouvé votre expérience au SMVC 2021?
R: Il m’a fait grand plaisir de retrouver SMVC à Montréal cette année pour ma 13 ème participation comme président de jury. J’ai personnellement beaucoup apprécié la belle luminosité dont nous avons pu bénéficier au 6ème étage de l’ITHQ pour cette édition ainsi que l’arrivée des tablettes électroniques pour nous soulager dans notre tâche et surtout nous permettre de nous concentrer davantage sur la dégustation. Je félicite M. Réal Wolfe et son équipe pour cette SMVC 2021.
Q: Pourquoi est-ce important pour vous de participer à SMVC?
R: À titre d’oenologue et de président de l’Association Canadienne des Oenologues il est important pour moi d’apporter toute notre expertise et notre soutient au concours SMVC.
Alain Cloutier est sommelier-conseil et ancien directeur des services Signature de la SAQ , aujourd'hui expert chez Alfred, une entreprise spécialisée en gestion de l'innovation dans le secteur des caves à vins. Il amène au SMVC une vision très pointue du secteur ainsi que des grandes tendances à l'International.
Q: Comment avez-vous trouvé votre expérience au SMVC 2021?
R: Vraiment passionnante, de pouvoir ainsi être en relation avec des professionnels et amateurs partageant tous cette passion pour le monde du vin et son industrie et ce, dans un contexte hautement professionnel est un réel privilège.
Q: Pourquoi est-ce important pour vous de participer à SMVC?
R: Les producteurs qui s’inscrivent à SMVC présentent le résultat de longs mois de travail en espérant recevoir une appréciation juste, il m’apparaît très important de contribuer à l’organisation du concours, d’y apporter de la rigueur et du professionnalisme. Je m’efforce au mieux à apporter au concours cette reconnaissance.
Teresa Colaço do Rosario is a wine columnist journalist. She lives in Germany and has great expertise in European markets. She is a collaborator for several magazines in Europe where she writes about the development of wines in Portugal, Europe and around the world. For SMVC 2021, she acts as an advisor to interest the wine regions of Portugal in developing their visibility on the Canadian market.
Q: How did you find your experience at SMVC 2021?
A: It is a great honor to collaborate with SMV Canada as a journalist responsible for Portuguese participation. It is a big challenge to help Portuguese Wines to position their image in the USA and Canada as these are key export markets for them. The quality and character of Portuguese Wines are worth being discovered by the consumers in North America. And the results of the 28th edition of SMV Canada are a reflection of that!
Q: Why is it important for you to participate in SMVC?
A: This competition is very professional and has high standards of quality. It is very important to participate in order to analyze the offer and position your own brands among the competition. It is also a relevant instrument to improve the sales on these markets and to show the high quality of the distinguished wines to the buyers and to the consumers.
Emeline Zufferey is the Director of VINEA, an organization promoting wines on the Swiss market by carrying out international and national competitions. She is also responsible for VINOFED, and in 2021, is the delegate of the OIV. Her expertise is exceptional and an asset for SMVC 2021.
Q: How did you find your experience at SMVC 2021?
A: This experience for me at the SMVC was incredible: incredible because it is the first big trip I have made in a very long time, so a feeling of newfound freedom that takes on a special flavor, and it was for me my very first visit to Canada, to Quebec and Montreal. I loved the professionalism of the tastings, the reunions and the sharing with the jurors during the competition and during the meals. The Quebecers are welcoming, relaxed and full of humor!
Q: Why is it important for you to participate in SMVC?
A: For us, the SMCV 2021 marks the beginning of a 3-year technical collaboration with the Montreal organizers. We provide the VINEAtech tasting software that we have developed since 2010 and that we have been using in all our European tasting competitions since 2012. If we had no doubt about the value of our product, running it on hardware that is not ours (the SMVC has invested in a fleet of 70 tablets) was indeed a first that our two respective computer scientists in Quebec and Switzerland have realized with brilliance! Congratulations to them and thank you to SMVC for the trust they have placed in us! We are happy and very proud of this beautiful collaboration across the Atlantic!
A trained oenologist, Vicente Migallon was president of the National Union of Spanish Oenologists and of the International Union of Oenologists. He is a wine producer who is passionate about the development of activities in the wine industry. That's why he created Enopassion, a company that organizes themed fairs around the world, including WBWE Amsterdam, the world's first bulk wine fair. Vicente Migallon is an active partner and collaborator of SMVC 2021.
Q: How did you find your experience at SMVC 2021?
A: I have been lucky enough to know the SMVC for more than 20 years during which I was also participating in many international competitions. During these years, I have always seen the SMVC as one of the best competitions in the world. This was due to its mainly neutral nature, for being a country that consumes wines from all over the world. This allows Canadian tasters to have an open mind when it comes to wine. SMVC’s registered wines are also undoubtedly among the best in the world.
Being able to come to this 2021 edition, in the first place has been of emotion. Due to the circumstances that we have been dragging since the appearance of COVID, it is my first intercontinental outing.
I have also found a perfectly organized contest. It came with a notepad to see defects and indicate them to improve future editions. I left it blank.
The tasting site is perfect: a renovated hotel school. The wine service with some super friendly students, the temperatures of the wines, and the computer system used have been excellent, simple, clear, and without errors or failures.
It has been a real pleasure.
Q: Why is it important for you to be a partner of SMVC?
A: I have known the president of the SMVC, Real Wolfe, for many years. We know each other very well and I saw how he organized the first years of the SMVC, as the person in charge, mandated by the SAQ to carry it out. For years, we have maintained this relationship, turning it into a friendship.
On the other hand, in my business, we are dedicated to holding international events in the wine and olive oil sector, such as the World bulk wine exhibition in Amsterdam, California and in Yantai (China), the World olive oil exhibition in Madrid, Enofusion, and thus a diversity of activities.
When Real Wolfe proposed to me to collaborate with him, and after the due economic studies, to separate friendship with business, we decided to do it. I have been a mere companion since the responsibility is entirely Real Wolfe's. He’s known for his great professionalism and seriousness, which made it easy for my company to invest in this project.
Pour conclure le flash sur notre jury, voici un mot du président des Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada, Réal Wolfe.
Pour moi SMVC 2021 fût un grande année, une année de transition. Plusieurs objectifs étaient sur le plan de travail: déménagement de Québec à Montréal, nouveau site pour le concours, informatisation de la saisie des notes sur tablettes et ce, après une édition marquée par la pandémie de 2020.
Nous avons, avec l'équipe, atteint ces objectifs. L'édition 2021 a été à la hauteur de nos attentes! Une participation brillante de plus de 1 900 vins pour SMVC 2021 nous a permis de devenir le concours au niveau international ayant la plus grande représentation en nombres de vin et de pays représentés à l'extérieur de l’Europe. Ce qui nous rend très très fier!
Le plus important demeure la qualité des vins présentés. Nous avons remis plus de 70 médailles Grand or, ayant obtenues 92 points et plus. Ce qui est formidable c'est aussi la diversité des producteurs et des pays représentés dans les résultats du palmarès de 2021.
On y voit les grandes tendances et l'évolution de l'offre des vins au niveau international. Un bon exemple: la plus haute note du concours a été remise à un vin biologique. Domaine La Rouviole Minervois Livinière cru a reçu une note de 97/100.
En terminant, je remercie tous les producteurs participants pour cette édition 2021 et je vous donne rendez-vous du 13 au 16 octobre 2022.
