SMVC 2022 Winners
The 2022 edition of Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada welcomed producers, negotiators and agents from 29 countries. A total of 1,705 wines competed in the various categories of the competition. The names of the Grand Gold medalists and other award winners were announced during the recognition evening that took place on the final day of the event.
The judges worked meticulously throughout the event, applying the competition rules and criteria with rigour and impartiality in order to determine the winners.
Some interesting statistics about the 29th edition of the 2022 SMVC edition
The high quality of the wines presented by the producers at this edition of the SMVC competition is still evident, with more than 20% of the products obtaining scores above 91 points for the Gold and Grand Gold medals.
SMVC 2022 is proud of its Top 50 which is made up of 52 Grand Gold medals with 93 points and more - a first!
The big European producing countries, Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy are doing very well with a total of 345 medals which represents 64% of the medals obtained.
Portugal won the most medals with 112 medals including 11 Grand Gold medals, which represents 37.7% of the 297 wines entered.
Portugal presents an incredible performance being the country with the most medals with 11 Grand Gold medals for its wines coming in from the regions of Tejo, Alentejo, and Setúbal.
Spain was awarded 90 medals out of 301 registered wines, that is to say, 29,9% of medals for products coming from the whole of Spain, with the participation of Castilla y León and Rioja.
Italy and France are not left behind with more than 512 wines presented; these two countries collect 28% of medals. For France, the regions of Medoc (with the crus Bourgeois) and the wines of the South of France have performed very well. On the Italian side, Sicily won several medals, as did Tuscany and Piedmont.
The variety in the types of wines presented was also great. Wines produced using sustainable, organic, biodynamic, natural or orange winemaking methods represented more than 14% of the wines entered in the competition.
A new trend in the competition is the important presence of sparkling wine, more than 144 wines were presented.
2022 Medals Distribution
Countries that stand out in a particular way by the ratio of wines presented and medals obtained:
Czech Republic: 8 medals out of 10, 80% of positive results.
Australia: 27 medals out of 55, 49% of positive results.
Mexico: 11 medals out of 25, 44% of positive results.
Lebanon: 8 medals out of 20, 40% positive results.
Switzerland: 9 medals out of 55, 36 % positive results.
